High School Credits
HGS is a college preparatory school, however in order to meet the needs of all students, students may earn one of two levels of diplomas. The Basic Diploma represents a student's successful completion of high school and a readiness to continue his or her education in a post-secondary setting. The Advanced Diploma illustrates that the student is exceptionally well-prepared for college. We encourage all our students to work towards the Advanced Diploma.

Basic Diploma. Graduation with a Basic Diploma requires a minimum of 20 high school credits, including 4 English, 3 history, 3 science, 3 math through Algebra II or its equivalent, 1 internship for each year in attendance except senior year, 2 PE credits, and electives. It is required that Ecology be one of the sciences. In addition, seniors must successfully complete their senior project, which must include a five-week full-time internship or fully participate in the Senior Trip during the second semester of senior year.

Advanced Diploma. Graduation with an Advanced Diploma requires a minimum of 28 high school credits, including 4 English, 4 history or social studies, 4 science, 4 math through Algebra II, 1 internship for each year in attendance except senior year, 2 PE credits, and electives. The student must earn an HGS accumulative GPA of 3.4 or greater, must choose to earn honors credits in at least one class per semester, and must have shown leadership in one or more areas. In addition, the student must successfully earn “Commendable” or “Outstanding” on his or her senior project. Students who do not have a learning issue that precludes second language acquisition must complete two years of foreign language.
