A New Middle School at HGS

We started our Middle School in September of 2010 with six bright, curious students and two exceptional teachers. We currently have twelve great kids in grades 6-8.

Our new middle school is an academically-rich, developmentally-appropriate dynamic program, designed to support students during this critical period.

In addition to regular classroom activities, we picked mint for tea at the Children's Garden, explored the Arboretum in DC, prepared food for the hungry at DC Central Kitchen, judged the high school's Cardboard Regatta at Dyke's Marsh and explored our own creek, Pike's Branch, a tributary of Cameron Run.

Teacher Ratio. Combined  6th, 7th & 8th grade of 12-16 kids, one masters-level lead teacher, a co-teacher, and specialists.

Academics. We believe that all of our students are gifted--it's just a matter of identifying and nurturing those gifts. A rich curriculum based on gifted and talented teaching strategies keeps students challenged and engaged.

In addition to their core classes, students have Spanish twice a week, Integrated Music twice a week, health once a week and another activity, such as Improv, or Yoga once a week.

Community Service and Field Studies. Wednesdays alternate between group community service and field studies.

PE/Recess. Kids this age need to play. In nice weather, they are free to eat their lunch outside anywhere on campus. Recess/PE is every day although it varies in length from a quick 15 minutes of outdoor games or tromping through the creek, to longer hikes or indoor games.
