The Howard Gardner School Receives Another Award! We were one of only forty schools state-wide to receive an award from Virginia Naturally for excellence in environmental education! Plus, we have just received our third environmental education grant!

About HGS... The Howard Gardner School is a small, progressive independent high school for college-bound learners in Alexandria, Virginia. With a focus on environmental science and the arts, the school’s mission is to help bright, creative non-traditional learners use their unique strengths to thrive academically, intellectually and emotionally. Hands-on learning and weekly field studies keep students active and involved, and internships let students explore their interests through work.

|
Our Facilities... The school has purchased a 1.36 acre property and received county approval to build a 5,500 square foot classroom building. Currently we use the vintage farmhouse on the property, a student-built outdoor classroom, an environmental workshop in the woods, and temporary classrooms in the church next door. We make full use of the property and are outside as often as possible--observing, relaxing, or studying.
